I Might As Well Be Wearing a Ball and Chain

I'll bet most of you think I'm going to talk about my marriage. Sorry to mislead you, but we're doing fine. As a matter of fact, Bill and I celebrated our 27th anniversary on Friday by going out to brunch at La Creperie in Fort Collins. We followed that up with a visit to the hole-in-the-wall bakery counter just around the corner and bought a few goodies to take home. All is well, except for the extra calories I consumed and now need to shed.

The ball and chain I'm talking about is my troublesome knee. I twisted it during my last trip out of town in early December and it's taking its own sweet time to get better.

In some ways, being hobbled is a good thing. It keeps me home and encourages me to read and write. But there are a few events I plan to attend this spring where this problem knee is going to cramp my style.

I have a short trip planned to see our new granddaughter (born in the wee hours Saturday morning), I'm signed up for Left Coast Crime 2013 in March, and the Northern Colorado Writers Conference in April. And I plan to head out of town again to visit my mom.

The grape vines must be pruned in February, two more raised 4x4 garden beds will be installed for me in March bringing the total to four, and I have a big long list of garden chores to perform as soon as the weather is nice.

And then there are my blogging and writing projects. Can't neglect those.

Meanwhile, as I exercise and coddle and apply ice packs and heat packs, I'll also be dragging my ball and chain (translated as limping, using a knee brace, and sometimes toting a cane, just in case).

Stupid old knee.

You might limp, but I bet that knee won't slow you down. Hope it heals before you have to do any serious walking.

Pat - First, congratulations on your anniversary! That's wonderful. I am sorry to hear about your knee, though. I hope it heals up quickly and I think you're being very wise to take extra-special care of it.

I am so impatient with any gimp or pain that slows me down! I just don't have time for it. Like all here have expressed, I hope you heal quickly.

But wow-- an anniversary, AND a new grandbaby. Congratulations on both. Kiss lots of little toes and cheeks and enjoy (the baby's, but of course what you and Bill do....)!

Sounds like you're doing everything you can with a bad situation, Patricia. I hope your knee doesn't give you too much more trouble!

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. I'm trying my best to put off any drastic solutions to the stupid old knee problem. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

And I saw my first picture of the new granddaugher. She's a darling (of course, what else would a grandma say?).

Hi Patricia .. gentle exercise all the time and I do hope it heals more quickly than it appears to right now ...

Have a great year ... Hilary

I've got an arthritic knee that gives me problems...especially climbing up and down bleachers at the grandkids' sports events. Here's hoping both our knees get stronger.

Congratulations on your new granddaughter.

Poor baby. I'm so sorry about your knee. I'm excited though to see you at Left Coast Crime. Are you going to do any panels?

I have such nice visitors to my blog. Thanks for the sympathy and all the congrats. I can't wait to see that baby.

Julie, as far as I know, I'm not assigned to any panels...at least not yet. I did sign up to work registration though.

So sorry about your knee, Pat! (But congrats on your anniversary)! I hope the knee gets better, but in the meantime, don't hesitate to give me a holler--I'd be glad to help in any way I can!

Congratulations on your anniversary and new grandbaby.

Knee problems are no fun, but it sounds like you're doing what it takes to heal.

April, I think if you made one of those awesome vegan desserts and served it at a critique group meeting, my knee would get better faster. :D

I finally heard from the new mama this afternoon. She says baby Emma is sleeping all day and keeping the whole family awake all night. I'm so glad to be a grandma instead of a new mama.
