Loretta the Lovable Lynx
What can I say about Loretta?
She lived a happy and solitary life in the mountains of Colorado, occasionally enjoying a short but passionate relationship with a handsome guy lynx, successfully raising her kits to be self-sufficient and sending them on their way, and generally enjoying life.
Loretta was so lovable the snowshoe hare in her territory followed her around like puppy dogs. Unfortunately, this created a serious dilemma for our little lynx. The snowshoe hare is what most lynx consider their food of choice. It’s a serious violation of the laws of nature to eat your best friends for dinner.
Loretta had to make a choice. Eliminate the hare from her diet and substitute voles and grouse, or stop being so lovable and chase the snowshoe hare groupies away with a fierce glare and an angry yowl.
I don’t know for sure, but I suspect Loretta chose to be a little less lovable. Survival of the fittest and all that.
What do you think?

Pat - Oh, that would be a dilemma. There's the 'elemental lynx' thing, but there's also the 'I'm lovable' thing and the 'Oh, it's cool to have groupies who adore me' thing. Hmmm... I'll bet she goes for the voles and grouses. When was the last time any of them adored her?
That would be some choice Patricia,
Enjoy your week-end.
Yvonne.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them:
To Be a Lynx or not to be a Lynx - ah, there's the rub! Sorry, I'm in a Shakespearean mood for some reason. Yep - feed the kits or be loved by vacuous bunnies - I know which one I'd choose! Jan Morrison
It's cute that it became a dilemma for her. There's lots of bunnies around here.
The real moral might be for the hare-- work the cuteness, work it!
Fun post.
Patricia, I love the lynx. Wish I had thought of that animal for today's painting! Thanks for sharing Loretta's story!

She can only go against her true nature for so long...
Awkward when you make friends with the folks you're meant to be eating ;)
Poor Loretta!
Loretta needs to eat.
It' is a common case of the fox vs. the hound in which the hound defies all that is right and just and stays true to his friend. (or so I hope)
Poor Loretta. But I think she had to do what she had to do, a lynx has to eat.
I adore lynxes - they're so unusual and beautiful -- especially that tuft of fur on their ears. It sounds like Loretta is in a quandary, at least she will be until dinner time rolls around! lol
New follower; great post! :-)
Those hares should have been brought up better - any parent worth its salt would have told them to steer clear of lynxes
It seems to me she chose to change her dietary plans in order to stay friends with the hare. Not good to eat your friends. I'm sure Loretta will be just fine with her other menu.
Be well, Patricia,
Gary
Oh, suspenseful situation. I'm with Alex. She can't fight her nature forever.
Great post :)
Well, you didn't say she made friends with them, just they found her magnetic. Easy pickings, I'd say. It's a cruel world!
It's not a decision I'd want to face ;)
Hi Patricia .. you caught us all - I suspect she'd choose to live and eat her dinner that's right there!
Lovable lynx then she'd become once again! ... Cheers Hilary
