The Squirrel Wins Round Three

Yes, I thought I was so smart.  I bought that really long S hook and hung it far from the trunk of the aspen tree. The squirrel was flummoxed.

Or so I thought.

It took a few days, but I looked out the window yesterday afternoon, and the squirrel was upside-down, its legs wrapped around the feeder, enjoying a little snack. I took my first photo through the screen because I knew the critter would run as soon as I opened the door.

That fuzzy brown thing that seems suspended in the air just to the right of the garage door is the squirrel.

I opened the door and went outside to take more pictures. This obnoxious animal is getting used to me hanging around, creating all the wonderful challenges and puzzles for her to solve. Yes, I've decided she's a girl. It's the persistence that convinced me.

She swung back and forth awhile before climbing back up the S hook, paw over paw, as though she were climbing a rope at the gym.

I suppose you think I'm going to give up and buy one of those $50 plastic squirrel hoods, don't you?

Nope. At least not yet. I have another idea. I just need to find my husband's drill...

Is drilling squirrels legal in Colorado?

LOL funny, Alex. No, I'm not allowed to drill the squirrel. However, I have some plastic freezer containers that might work as a homemade hood. Unfortunately, hubby's drill is broken. I need to go to Plan B.

Pat - I do have sympathy for you and for the birds. I really do. But that squirrel has such chutzpah! You gotta respect that brazen determination. But OK, I do hope Plan B works.

You and Curt need to commiserate. He has daily battles with the squirrels outside his office window here at home. I ended up getting him a squirrel-proof feeder in June, and so far, it's worked out pretty good and Curt seems to sinister-ly enjoy watching the squirrels be thwarted by it.

Maybe if you put out corn for the squirrel, he'd leave the feeder alone?

Reminds me of the gopher in "Caddyshack" that Bill Murray can't rid of. Have you tried dynamite?:)

I hope you don't plan to drill the squirrel. Very smart little animal.

Thanks for visiting the dragon cave. :)

Hi Patricia .. creatures are amazingly creative and determined to get to easy food - trouble is the human decides another test is on the cards ..

Good luck to round 3 or is it 4 now?! Cheers Hilary

Funny how a squirrel, a bird feeder and the effort it takes to make the whole system "work" how you want it resembles the effort to write a novel. Just never seems to quite fit how you want, does it?

Good luck with the squirrel saga. You've already got the novel thing figured out pretty well.
