The Second Mouse Gets the Cheese by Carolyn P. Schriber, A Book Review

The Second Mouse Gets the Cheese: How to Avoid the Traps of Self-Publishing
By Carolyn P. Schriber
Katzenhaus Books, January, 2012
ISBN: 978-0982774557
Trade Paperback $12.95
Ebook $2.99

Carolyn Schriber speaks from personal experience when she offers advice about self-publishing and how to avoid the pitfalls. Not only did she self-publish her historical novel, Beyond All Price, she also started her own publishing house, Katzenhaus Books, with a solid business and marketing plan.

Schriber’s online launch party spanned several days with a dedicated website, guest authors, recipes, games, and giveaways.

The Second Mouse Gets the Cheese covers Schriber’s decision-making process from idea to finished product and she tells all with the goal of saving other authors from making mistakes. Building an online platform, choosing good software and embracing technology, methods and mistakes in historical research, self-editing, and marketing are all covered with tips and warnings. And that big launch party? Schriber tells exactly what went well and what was wrong with her approach.

I highly recommend this book as a basic introduction to self-publishing for those who are new to the process or have had a bad experience in the past.

I had a download of this book to read and review, but unfortunately with the start of the A to Z Challenge I didn't finish. I'm going to go back to it later. I liked the style and the content seemed to be very useful--at least up to the point where I had to stop.
